Inspired by a museum exhibition in Vienna entitled “Wir sind Masken”, Daniel launches a new concert program series on the topic of masks.
For millennia, humans have used masks to hide many of the deeper, darker aspects of their personality. Whether it is in exotic African cults or in the zany characters of Commedia dell’Arte, masks have the power to transcend the trivialities of everyday life, unleashing a mysterious force that propels us all into a state of wonder.
Robert Schumann, often believed that his music revealed a kind of shadow self, as if his objective self wanted to separate itself completely from his subjective self, or as if he stood between his appearance and his actual being. Perhaps no work illustrates this better than his masterwork piano suite, the Carnaval, Op. 9.
My goal in creating Masks was to put together those composers who wrote under the guise of a mask, bringing to life Schumann’s imaginary entourage known as the Davidsbündler society, or the buffoonery and zany antics of Pulcinella as found in the music of prominent 20th century composers.
