After a very successful chamber music concert with my violinist on New Year’s Day, we decided to look on the internet for a last-minute travel deal to some far away place.
3 days later we ended up in one of the most beautiful islands on the planet…Mauritius, an African country in the Southern hemisphere about 600 Km off the coast of Madagascar.
The first impression is unforgettable: azure-ocean waters, fields of sugar-cane, smiling and sympathetic faces, white sand beaches as well as dramatic, rocky coastlines.
Sleeping no more than 4 hours a day, in one week we saw more than most people would see in one month. We hiked through the lush, magnificent jungles in the interior of the island only to bathe under cool, refreshing waterfalls in the bottom. We took out speedboats in the morning and played together with the dolphins, who could outswim us with a small trickle of their fin.
After a few nights of African sega dancing on the beach while drinking native green island rum, we soon accomplished our ultimate of goal of the trip – to supremely appreciate the feeling of doing absolutely nothing.
